(SDK) has completed additional production line for VGCFTM (vapor-grown carbon fiber) at Kawasaki Plant, Kanagawa Prefecture, thereby increasing total production capacity for the product from 100 t/y to 200 t/y. In recognition of the significant growth opportunity associated with the global battery marketplace, BASF is creating a new global business unit that will bring together its current and future battery-related electromobility activities. As part of this transition, a new global business unit ¡ÈBattery Materials¡É will be formed, effective January 1, 2012. This business unit will integrate the existing battery activities of BASF¡Çs Catalysts division, which is focused on cathode materials development; its Intermediates division, which is focused on electrolyte formulations, and BASF Future Business GmbH, which is focused on next-generation lithium battery opportunities. Starting in the end of April 2011, Sony will begin volume shipments of energy storage modules that use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries made with olivine-type lithium-ion iron phosphate as the cathode material (hereafter referred to as ¡Æolivine-type lithium-ion iron phosphate cell¡Ç). These energy storage modules have a lifespan of over 10 years, excellent safety performance, rapid recharging capabilities and high scalability.
