Idemitsu invests in U.S.-based CREW Carbon and will investigate Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) collaborations at wastewater treatment facilities

TOKYO, JAPAN – 15 May 2026 - Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. (“Idemitsu”) has invested in CREW Carbon Inc. (“CREW”) through its Corporate Venture Capital group. CREW and Idemitsu are collaborating to investigate deploying CREW’s carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology and approach at wastewater treatment facilities worldwide including in Japan and other Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) countries. This investment allows Idemitsu to deepen their technical CDR expertise and commercial understanding of the carbon removal market.

CREW created the world’s first carbon credits using Wastewater Alkalinity Enhancement (WAE) technology, a CDR approach. The WAE process prevents carbon dioxide release into the atmosphere ensuring it remains in the wastewater released from sewage plants. CREW have a proprietary Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system that accurately and transparently calculates the net CO2 removed, enabling high-quality certified carbon credits that can be sold. Sequestering the CO2 in the wastewater removes the need for investment in carbon capture units, avoiding a large installation footprint.

Idemitsu is evaluating business models that promote negative emissions and is developing technology that supports the achievement of carbon neutrality in society by 2050. To enable these targets Idemitsu is making strategic investments in startups with advanced expertise and a track record in CDR and MRV. Achieving carbon neutrality targets will require a general reduction in CO2 emissions but also reliable, transparent processes that remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Japan is one of the world’s leading producers of limestone used in the CREW process and provides an environment in which calcium carbonate required for CO2 sequestration in CREW’s CDR solution can be economically sourced. Idemitsu will support the future deployment of CREW’s technology in Japan and other countries.
